instructions

You'll need to bake a cake - square or round - ready to decorate. You can also purchase a ready made cake so you don't have to do any baking (and get stuck straight into the decorating!)

Preparing The Cake

1. Before you start to add your cigarellos to the cake, you firstly need to do some preparation work. Start by dividing your cake into two equal halves. To get a nice, clean and even separation, try using a cake leveller. Next, using a palette knife, spread a thick layer of buttercream onto one of the halves and sandwich the cake together.

2. To make the cigarellos stick to the cake, you will now need to buttercream the rest of the cake. Again, using your palette knife, start from the top and work your way around the sides of the cake until it is completely covered in buttercream. You may find it helps to use a cake decorating turntable for this.

Decorating With Cigarellos

3. Now that the cake is covered in delicious buttercream, it's time to start adding your luxury chocolate cigarellos to the cake. Add the cigarellos one by one, ensuring that the sides are touching each other. You want to make the cigarellos tightly packed so that there are no gaps where buttercream can seep through! Here we have used both milk and white chocolate cigarellos to create a striped pattern, but you can of course use whatever colours and flavours you like!

Styling Your Ribbon

4. If you're going for a rustic look, you could opt for a brown stitched grossgrain ribbon to emphasise the chocolatey nature of the cake! If you'd rather do this than use a plain satin ribbon, then why not make a little bow for extra detail around your cake board? Start by cutting the ribbon into two pieces, one roughly 2" long and the other 1" in length.

5. Add a piece of double-sided sticky tape to the back of the longer piece of ribbon.

6. Fold the ends of the ribbon to the back so that they meet in the middle. Stick the ends down to the tape.

7. Use a piece of wire or cotton thread to gather the centre of the bow to give it shape and hold it in place. Wrap the second piece of ribbon around the centre of the bow, securing at the back with double-sided sticky tape.

8. You can now attach the ribbon to the edge of your cake drum using double-sided sticky tape!

Adding The Decoration

9. Now it's time to decorate the top of the cake. Here we have used some delicious malteasers to create a pattern. Simply pop the malteasers, one by one, around the edge of your cake working your way inwards. The layer of buttercream on your cake should keep them in place.

10. If your cake is for a birthday or special occasion, you can choose to add a number topper or other elegant decoration. We've opted for a silver diamante '21' topper and simply popped this into the centre of the cake.

11. The next part will show you how to make your malteaser 'springs' for extra effect. This is a good way to make the malteasers appear as though they are jumping away from the cake! Start by taking one of the silver cake wires and wrap this around a cake pop stick or other similar object. This will make the coil that will form the spring.

12. Take the end of the spring and, holding a malteaser in one hand, insert the end of the wire into it until it is firmly stuck to the end of the spring.

13. Trim the end of the wire with a pair of scissors, but be sure to leave enough wire to stick into the cake.

14. Make a few more of the malteaser springs and arrange these on top of your cake. We've placed them in a central pattern so that they are coming away from our diamante topper.

15. To tie in the silver theme, you can choose to lightly dust some of the malteasers with silver lustre dust. Using a sable brush, dip the end into the lustre dust and then gently paint the malteasers. You will find this gives them a lovely shimmering sheen. Here we have dusted every other malteaser around the edge of the cake to create a pattern.

16. The next step is to make the silver star springs. You can choose to either leave these plain or style them with letters to spell out a name or phrase. You can also experiment with colours - we have used silver modelling paste as this compliments our silver topper, but gold would also look lovely using our gold modelling paste. Start by rolling the modelling paste out to around 3mm thick and then take your medium star cutter to create the first star shape.

17. Cut out as many stars as you need to spell out the correct name or phrase, or if you're leaving them blank you can use as many as you like!

18. Next, roll out your white sugarpaste or modelling paste to around 2mm thick. Use the clickstix cutter to create the letters for your star toppers.

19. Using a little edible glue, stick each letter to the stars. You can now dust the letters with silver lustre dust for a shimmery effect.

20. Next you need to put a wire into each star, similar to how you created the malteaser springs, only this time leave the wires straight. Stick each star into the cake one by one and position these however you like. You'll need to leave enough wire at the end for placing into your cake so that they stand up straight and don't fall over!

21. The final step is to add a lovely ribbon around the centre of your chocolate cigarello cake to tie everything together. We couldn't decide which style we preferred most, so we've gone for a chocolate brown stitched ribbon around the cake drum and middle of the cake, as well as showing you how to style your cake using silver satin ribbon with a diamante buckle. Two gorgeous styles that you can play around with to fit with your theme and occasion!

That's it! You've decorated your very own chocolate cigarello cake and now it's time to sit back, relax and enjoy a slice!
