instructions

For part 1 you'll need a 6" sponge cake, but you might also want to make your larger 8" cake ready for later too. These will both need to be covered with sugarpaste, the 6" cake with light blue sugarpaste and the 8" cake with pastel yellow.

Decorating The Cake Drum

1. The first step before anything else is to cover your cake drum. For this you'll need roughly 400g chocolate brown sugarpaste and you'll need to roll this out big enough to cover the surface of your cake drum. Knead the sugarpaste thoroughly before rolling it out on your work surface dusted with icing sugar. Carefully lift the sugarpaste and place this over your cake drum. Trim the edges with a sharp knife (don't worry about any rough edges, these will be covered with satin ribbon later!)

2. The next step is to use your wood mat to create texture on the sugarpaste. You can either use a small texture mat as we have done here, or if you want to make things a little easier for yourself you can purchase one of the large texture sheets. Press the mat firmly into the sugarpaste until the pattern is embossed over the entire surface of the cake drum.

3. Now you want to create the wooden 'panels' to make a realistic bedroom floor effect. Use the blade modelling tool to create several vertical deep lines down the length of your sugarpaste. These should be roughly 1.5 - 2" apart. You only want to indent the sugarpaste, so be careful when doing this that you don't pierce through it!

4. To break up the wood panels, draw several horizontal lines across each wood panel, again using the blade modelling tool.

5. To make the panels appear as though they are screwed down to the floor, use the cone modelling tool to make small holes in the corners of each panel.

Making The Number Decoration

6. Ok, so now you've decorated your cake drum, it's time to move onto the top tier cake. If you haven't already covered your cake with light blue sugarpaste, now is the time to do this.

7. The first decoration you need to make is the age. If your cake isn't for a birthday then you can leave this part out and move onto making the clouds. Start by taking two golf ball sized pieces of yellow and powder blue sugarpaste and roll these into balls.

8. Roll the powder blue sugarpaste out first to roughly 2mm thick. Using the larger number cutter, cut out the appropriate number for your cake.

9. Similarly, roll out the yellow sugarpaste to roughly 2mm thick and cut out the same number using a smaller cutter.

10. Place the yellow number on top of the blue number. If your number cutters are slightly different in shape, as ours are here, don't worry! Simply take a knife and carefully cut off any excess sugarpaste from your blue number.

11. Dab a small amount of edible glue on the back of your number plaque and stick this to the front of your 6" cake.

Making The Clouds

12. An easy way to make cloud shapes (unless you have a cloud cutter lying around) is to use a blossom flower cutter. Roll out your white sugarpaste to approximately 2mm thick and use the blossom cutter to make lots of flower shapes. You can also use the PME flower cutter set to make clouds.

13. Take a sharp knife and cut off the bottom two petals of your blossom flowers. This will create two different cloud shapes. If you're using the PME flower cutter set, cut your flowers in half to make the cloud shapes.

14. Stick the clouds to the cake in a random pattern (these are clouds, after all) using a small amount of edible glue. Make sure you decorate all around the sides of your cake with clouds.

How easy was that!? You've now completed part 1 and your top tier is done! Now it's time to move onto part 2, so don't put your apron away just yet!
