instructions

Before you decorate your cake, you'll need to have made your crab and octopus and starfish and clownfish cake toppers, as well as the coral and sponges and seaweed and shells. See the bottom of the page to find out how to make these. You'll also need a round cake and cake drum.

Making The Sand

1. Using a selection of cornish cream, brown and radiant gold coloured dusts, mix together in a bowl until the colours have blended. Add a little edible gold glitter to create extra sparkle in your sand.

2. Take your pre-iced cake and dab a little edible glue all the way around the base. Use a teaspoon to sprinkle the sand mixture around the cake. The sand should stick to the glue to keep it in place.

Making The Wooden Sign Post

3. For the sign post, you firstly need to add some gum tragacanth to your brown sugarpaste and knead well. This will ensure the sign sets hard so it will stand upright on your cake! Roll out the sugarpaste to approximately 2mm thick.

4. Next, take the wood impression mat and press this into the sugarpaste to give it a realistic texture.

5. Cut three strips out of the sugarpaste, approximately xcm in width and xcm in length. Lay two of the strips horizontally over the top of the third strip.

6. Secure the strips into place using edible glue. The final step is to create the text to go on the sign, and this can be whatever you like!

7. To make the text, simply roll out a piece of white modelling paste (or whatever colour you like) to roughly 2mm thick. Using the Clikstix Small Font Upper Case Cutter, cut out each letter one by one and stick these to your sign using a little edible glue.

Adding The Decorations To The Cake

8. The final part is to add your sea plants and creatures to your cake! Here we have decorated the edge of the cake with sea plants, sticking each one into place with a little edible glue. Make sure that you space these out the whole way around your cake in a random pattern. The top of the cake should feature your main characters (octopus, crab and clownfish). Again you can secure these into place using edible glue! To make the sign stand upright, gently and carefully push the base of the sign into your sugarpaste. Sprinkle a little sand around the base to disguise the join!

9. Add a professional finish by tying a baby blue satin ribbon around the edge of your cake drum, securing at the back with a pin.
