instructions

You might want to bake a cake or cupcakes to sit your toppers on once you've completed the tutorial. Why not follow our 'spider web cupcakes' tutorial (as seen in the main image) to create something extra spooky - see our related tutorials at the bottom of the page for more!

Witches Hat

1. Take a grape-sized piece of black sugarpaste and roll this into a smooth, round ball.

2. Next take another piece of sugarpaste and roll this out to approximately 3mm thick. Using a 1.5" round cutter (approx), cut out a circle.

3. Take the round ball you made earlier and, using your fingers, roll this into a tall cone shape. Make sure the narrow end of the cone comes to a point.

4. Place the cone on top of the circle (roughly in the centre) and gently mould this to the base using your fingers. Carefully bend the top of the cone so that it curls over slightly. You will now see the witches hat is starting to take shape!

5. Next take a small piece of green sugarpaste and roll this out to approximately 1mm thick. Cut out a strip measuring roughly 0.5cm in width and 6cm in length.

6. Wrap the green strip around the base of the hat, securing at the back using your fingers. Cut off any excess sugarpaste.

7. Finally, to make the buckle, take a tiny piece of silver modelling paste and roll this into a thin sausage shape. Bend the sausage, using your fingers, into a small rectangle shape and the ends together. Use a little edible glue to stick the buckle to the front of the hat.

Ghost

8. Now you can move onto the ghost. Start by taking a piece of white sugarpaste, around the size of a walnut, and mould this into a cone shape with a rounded top. This will be used as the base for your ghost.

9. Take another piece of white sugarpaste and roll this out to approximately 2mm thick. Use a 2 - 2.5" round cutter and cut out a circle.

10. Drape the circle over the top of the ghost cone shape. Using your fingers, gently mould the circle to the shape of the cone, ensuring the base of the circle flares out slightly.

11. Now all that's left to do is give your ghost a face! Using a black edible ink pen, draw two oval shapes for eyes, and one oval shape beneath these for a mouth. Leave the ghost to dry & harden.

Pumpkin

12. To make the pumpkin, take a piece of orange sugarpaste (how big depends on how big you want the pumpkin to be) and roll this into a smooth, round ball.

13. Using a cocktail stick or the pointed end of the quilting tool, create several vertical lines running down the sides of the pumpkin, starting in the centre at the top of the pumpkin.

14. Make a small hole in the top of the pumpkin, again using a cocktail stick or the end of the quilting tool.

15. To make the stalk of the pumpkin, take a tiny piece of green sugarpaste and roll this into a sausage shape. Dab the end of the stalk with a little edible glue, and sit this into the hole on top of the pumpkin.

16. For the eyes and mouth of the pumpkin, you firstly need to roll out a small piece of black sugarpaste to roughly 1mm thick. Use a sharp knife to cut out three identical square shapes (measuring approx 0.5cm x 0.5cm).

17. Cut the squares in half (diagonally) to make triangle shapes.

18. Stick two of the triangles to the front of the pumpkin where you want the eyes to be. Use three of the remaining triangles to make a mouth beneath the eyes and secure into place using a little edible glue.

19. Leave your fondant toppers to one side to dry and there you have it! Three tasty and spooky cupcake decorations!
