instructions

You'll need to work some gum tragacanth into your sugarpaste before you start to make it easier to work with, and this will also allow your sugarpaste bow to dry hard.

Making The Polka Dots

1. We'll ease into this tutorial by firstly showing you how to make a polka dot design. Of course if you want your bow to be plain, you can miss these steps. To begin with, roll out some hot pink sugarpaste to roughly 1mm thick. Next roll lots of tiny little balls of white sugarpaste and arrange these on top of the hot pink sugarpaste, spacing them out into an even pattern.

2. Use the wider end of the ball modelling tool to squash the balls into the pink sugarpaste.

3. Using a sugarpaste ribbon cutter, set the width of the spacers to 2" apart and cut a strip out of the polka dot sugarpaste. Measure the length of the strip and cut it to 4" to make a rectangular shape.

4. Next, fold the rectangle in half (length ways) and gently pinch the middle to create a gathered or pleated effect. Place a cake pop stick or similar shaped object though the looped end of the bow to keep it from completely sticking together.

5. Repeat these steps to make the other half of the bow.

Making The Plain Bow

6. Now you need to make the plain bow! To do this, roll out a piece of hot pink sugarpaste, again to roughly 1mm thick. Cut this into a rectangle shape, measuring 2" in width and 8" in length. Fold the ends over so that they meet in the middle and secure together using a little water.

7. Use a cutting wheel or sharp knife to cut a 'V' shape out of the centre of the rectangle, both the top and bottom to form a bow shape.

8. Sit the polka dot bow on top of the plain one, sticking them together using edible glue. With the remaining polka dot sugarpaste, cut a long strip, roughly 1.5cm in width and 5cm in length.

9. Wrap the strip around the centre of the bow, and secure at the back - again using a little edible glue. Trim off the excess sugarpaste if needs be.

There you have it! An adorable sugarpaste bow in only 9 simple steps. If you're making the Minnie Mouse cake, you can now add this to the head of your Minnie Mouse to dry in position.
