'Inside Out' is a fabulous film that is enjoyed by children and adults alike, so we thought 'why not make a cake inspired by this fun movie!?' The cake would be great for children's birthday parties and is really easy to make and looks impressive, too! You could even add to the design by colouring your layers of cake in different shades (just add a little paste/ liquid colour to your cake mix) or colour your frosting instead. You only need a few tools (some of these you may even already have) and several colours of sugarpaste, so let's get started!

instructions

For this tutorial you will need a round cake (here we've used a 6" sponge) and a 9" round cake drum. Sit the cake on top of the drum, layer it with buttercream and then cover the cake and the drum with deep purple sugarpaste. Trim off any excess with a sharp knife.

Covering The Cake

1. Cover your 6" cake with a reasonable layer of frosting and position this in the centre of your cake drum. Knead and roll out the 750g of purple sugarpaste to 3 / 4mm thick and drape this over the cake and drum. Gently use your hands and fingers to smooth the sugarpaste down, finishing off with a cake smoother to iron out any lumps and bumps. Now you're ready to decorate!

Decorating With Gum Balls

2. You're going to need around 70 coloured gum balls for a 6" cake, so if you're making a bigger cake you're going to need a few more of these! If you can, try and get red, green, blue, yellow and purple gum balls to match the theme. To make them 'shine', take the snowflake lustre dust and using the medium sable brush, lightly dust each gum ball until it has a lovely sheen.

3. Place each gum ball one by one around the base of the cake. To make them stick in position (so they don't roll away), use a little edible glue. Arrange them in whatever pattern you like (just remember that in the film yellow is joy, blue is sadness, green is disgust, red is anger and purple is fear!)

4. In the film there are shelves stacked high with memory balls that glow the colour of the emotion suited to each memory. Here we're going to make two shelves stacked with coloured gum balls to suit the theme! To make the shelves, start by taking a chunk of purple sugarpaste and mix some Gum Tragacanth into this (1 tsp per 250g). This will allow the sugarpaste to set hard and hold it's shape.

5. Roll the purple sugarpaste into a long sausage and roll this out to roughly 3mm thick to form a long strip.

6. Take your ribbon cutter and adjust the width to approximately 1". Carefully use the cutter to create a uniform strip out of the purple sugarpaste (this will be used to make the shelf for the memory balls to sit on).

7. Gently lift the strip up and place this around the cake so that it sits comfortably on top of the layer of gum balls. Trim any excess sugarpaste off and join the ends together at the back of the cake using your fingers.

8. Repeat steps 3-7 to form a second shelf of memory (gum) balls.

Making The Name Toppers

9. To personalise the cake, why not put the name of the birthday girl/ boy on top!? To do this, firstly start by taking a chunk of white modelling paste and roll this out to approximately 5mm thick. Use the alphabet cutters to create the letters.

10. Leave the letters to one side to dry & stiffen up slightly before placing them on top of the cake. Once you're happy with the positioning, push each letter gently into the cake to keep it stood upright. You can also use a little edible glue for extra support.

Making The Coloured Dots

11. To make the circular dots, roll out your sugarpaste as thin as you can (without breaking it) and cut out circle shapes using the round cutter set (in various sizes). Repeat this step with the other colours of sugarpaste.

12. Stick the circles in a random pattern over the top of the cake and secure into place using a little edible glue.

Finishing Touches

13. For an extra special finishing touch, place a glitter number topper into the cake for a super sparkly design! We have lots of numbers available for you to pick and choose from, and they look absolutely fabulous.

14. Lastly, tie the rainbow ribbon around the edge of the cake drum for a professional finish. You can secure this at the back using a drawing pin or double-sided sticky tape!
