instructions

Before you can begin to decorate your Super Mario cake, you're going to need to bake one. If you want to get stuck right into things and ensure you have the perfect and tastiest cake without the hassle of making it yourself, why not try one of our ready made sponges? Once you've made or bought your sponge cake, you need to cover it in blue sugarpaste. You'll also need a round cake drum approximately 3 inches bigger than your cake, and you'll need to cover this in green sugarpaste. If you haven't already made your Super Mario characters, see our related tutorials and follow the steps so your toppers are ready to be added to the cake!

Making The Bricks & Gold Squares

1. The first thing you're going to make for your cake is the bricks. Start by taking a piece of brown sugarpaste and roll this out to approximately 1mm thick. Cut this into a strip, roughly 1” in width and no less than 3” in length.

2. Next take your brick impression mat and press this firmly into the strip of brown sugarpaste. You'll find this creates a very realistic brick pattern in a matter of seconds! Cut the strip into 3 equal pieces, ideally 1” x 1”.

3. You'll need to make two more square shapes, this time out of gold modelling paste. Take your modelling paste and knead this well (if it's a little hard, warm it in your hands first). Again, roll this out to approximately 1mm in thickness. Cut out two squares (the same size as your bricks).

4. Using the smaller end of the ball modelling tool, create 4 indentations in each corner of the gold squares.

5. Glue the bricks and the gold squares roughly half way up the side of your pre-iced cake. You can create as many bricks and squares as you like and place these onto your cake as appropriate.

Gold Coins

6. Next, you'll need to make some of the famous Super Mario gold coins! Use the gold modelling paste and cut out several small gold circles using a small circle cutter. Use the flower modelling tool to create an indentation in the centre of the coin. Use a little edible glue and stick the coins above the bricks.

Landscape

7. Now you're going to make the landscape! Roll out two shades of green sugarpaste to approximately 1mm thick. Use a cutting wheel or sharp knife to gain a nice straight edge, and then carve two hill shapes out of the sugarpaste, as pictured.

10. Position the hills to the bottom of your cake and secure into place using edible glue.

11. To finish the decoration around the side of your cake, make some fluffy white clouds out of white sugarpaste. The easiest way to do this is to use a flower cutter and then slice this into two pieces. Glue these to the cake (around the sides and to the top surface).

Adding Characters

12. Now that you've decorated around the sides of your Super Mario cake, you can start to add your characters! If you haven't already made them, now is the time to do so. You can follow our tutorials for Super Mario, Yoshi the dinosaur, Super Mushroom and the Jumping Star, just see our related tutorials for ideas. Sit a selection of characters around the cake drum (we've saved Super Mario and the Jumping Star for on top of the cake) but the choice is entirely up to you.

Building The Wall

13. The next part is a little tricky so take your time. Add some gum tragacanth to your brown sugarpaste to strengthen it, and then roll this into a long, thin sausage shape. Roll this out so that it becomes flattened. You want the sugarpaste to be approximately 3mm in thickness.

14. Use a sharp knife or cutting wheel ideally to cut the strip into a long thin rectangle and again, use the brick impression mat to give the sugarpaste texture.

15. Use the small wheel cutter to cut out several of the bricks from the upper edge of the wall, so that some bricks are raised higher than others. You will now need to leave the wall to dry before placing it on top of your cake.

16. Lastly, place your Super Mario topper and Super Star topper on top of your cake. You can also add some finishing touches, such as ribbon around your cake drum.

And that's it! You've successfully made the perfect Super Mario cake - stand back and admire your work. Now for the last step: eat a slice!
